Position Summary
The Professor of Counseling is a full-time, tenure-track member of the faculty. Professorial rank will be assigned at a level commensurate with professional experience. The Professor of Counseling will be active in teaching, scholarly research, institutional service, and service to the Church. All faculty positions report to the Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) with duties assigned by the VPAA.
The Professor of Counseling will join all WTS faculty in a commitment to the historic Christian faith and Reformed theological tradition as described in the seminary’s theological identity statement, as well as to its mission to “form women and men for faithful Christian ministry and participation in the Triune God’s ongoing redemptive work in the world.” The MA in CMHC program at WTS equips women and men to be wise, competent, humble, and hopeful practitioners, who are attuned to their own selves and stories. Our relationally-oriented and trauma-informed program offers the most contemporary, research-based training while, at the same time, remaining deeply rooted in a Christian soul care tradition which has informed compassionate care for centuries.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach a full course load (typically 15-18 credits per academic year)
- Advise and mentor MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling students
- Be actively engaged in scholarly research, writing, and presenting through a variety of means such as professional journals, non-scholarly Christian publications, personal websites, podcasts, etc.
- Assist with the admissions process in interviewing, evaluating, and selecting qualified applicants
- Participate in ongoing assessment of the curriculum and student learning
- Participate in appropriate professional organizations in the counseling field
- Serve on faculty committees as assigned by the VPAA
- Perform other faculty duties as assigned by the VPAA
Qualifications:
- Committed to the historic Christian faith, the Reformed theological tradition, and the mission and identity of Western Theological Seminary
- Unwavering support of the education and ordination of women for all forms of ministry
- Strong commitment to and active participation in the local and global church
- Completed doctorate in the field of Counselor Education, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program (or have a related doctoral degree and have been employed as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013)
- Successful experience in teaching introductory and advanced courses in clinical counseling at a graduate or undergraduate level
- Demonstrated professional publication record
- Experience in conducting professional counseling and supervising counselor trainees. [The applicant will be expected to become licensed as a mental health counselor in the State of Michigan]
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
