Description
The Religion Department at Middlebury College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in Judaism beginning Fall 2026. We seek a religious studies scholar and teacher with extensive training in Jewish history, thought, and practice. Facility with classical Hebrew and competence in the texts of rabbinic Judaism are essential, but candidates must demonstrate an ability to teach Jewish religion beyond study of the Bible. Precise specialization is open, though we are especially interested in candidates whose expertise lies beyond the contexts of Europe and North America. We also seek candidates with expertise distinct from Middlebury's current strengths in modern Jewish history and the social-scientific study of the Jewish people.
Our faculty have significant freedom to develop courses according to their own intellectual interests. Teaching responsibilities will include an introductory course on the Jewish religious tradition as well as lectures and seminars on more specific topics. The successful candidate will also be prepared to join a rotation of instructors for our team-taught "Introduction to Religion" course and a senior seminar in theories and methods in the study of religion.
This position plays a vital role in Middlebury's interdisciplinary Jewish Studies program. Depending on expertise, there may also be opportunities to contribute to other interdisciplinary programs such as International and Global Studies; Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies; Environmental Studies; Comparative Literature; Black Studies; and/or Food Studies.
Our department is deeply committed to undergraduate teaching, and the ideal candidate will share that investment. We also collectively represent a wide range of methodological approaches to the study of religion and regularly engage in conversation about the differences in our training as well as our shared research and teaching interests. As part of a full-time teaching load (4.5 classes per year on average), the candidate will occasionally contribute to Middlebury's First Year Seminar program and Winter Term course offerings. All faculty at Middlebury are also expected to contribute to service to the College including, but not limited to, committee membership and serving as Director or Chair of a Program or Department.
Middlebury College is a top-tier liberal arts college with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in both faculty teaching, research, and service. It is also an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to fostering an open and supportive learning, teaching, and working environment. The College hires faculty from a myriad of life experiences, cultures, frames of reference, social identities, and learning perspectives to help cultivate and advance innovation in our curriculum and to provide a rich and varied educational experience to our talented and distinguished student body. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status. This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $88,963 – $100,129 per year.
To apply, please submit through Interfolio the following documents by October 10, 2025: a cover letter, CV, graduate transcript, and the names of three recommenders, at least two of whom can speak to the candidate's teaching ability. More information is available at https://apply.interfolio.com/172847 and http://middlebury.edu/college/academics/religion. Questions about the position should be directed to the search committee chair, Professor Jennifer Ortegren ([email protected]).
