The candidate must have a Ph.D. in plant pathology, mycology, one of the plant or microbial sciences, or a related discipline.
Position Summary
The Department of Plant Pathology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) at the University of Georgia is recruiting for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in Fungal Biology/Mycology with 70% research, 25% teaching, and 5% service appointment. This is an academic-year (9-month), tenure- track appointment located at the Athens Campus. The successful candidate will develop a dynamic, innovative, internationally recognized, and extramurally funded research program in basic fungal biology. Areas of interest include computational biology and comparative, population, or functional genomics, with the goal of understanding ecological or evolutionary patterns and processes of plant-pathogenic fungi. Research using novel and contemporary approaches into the molecular, ecological, or evolutionary aspects of pathogenic fungal-plant host interactions is also of interest. The position offers rich opportunities for collaborations with colleagues in the Department of Plant Pathology, the Fungal Biology Group, the Plant Center, and the Institute of Bioinformatics. There is an expectation of excellence in grantsmanship, timely communication of research findings via peer-reviewed journal articles, active participation in the mentoring of graduate students and postdoctoral scientists and contributing to a dynamic environment within the university. Initial instructional responsibilities will include teaching Mycology, a split-level graduate and undergraduate student course, and Fungi, Friends and Foes, a large lecture-format course on the impact of fungi on human civilization.
Additional Requirements
The candidate must have a Ph.D. in plant pathology, mycology, one of the plant or microbial sciences, or a related discipline. Applicants should have documented research background appropriate for the appointment rank, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in fungal biology/mycology. Demonstrated success teaching in a classroom setting for one or more semesters.
To be considered for the rank of Associate Professor, candidates must have at least 5 full years in rank at the Assistant Professor level. To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an Associate Professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably regional and/or national reputation to the institution.
